“Cardboard Embodied” by the 3D Foundations Class at Thompson Rivers University from the Fall 2023 in the KAC Alcove & Vault Galleries
Tuesday, March 19 to Thursday, March 28, 2024
Mediums: Cardboard
Exhibition Statement:
This exhibition features cardboard sculptures made by students in VISA 1030: 3D Foundations at Thompson Rivers University in the Fall 2023 semester. Students were asked to respond to the following prompt: Create a wearable cardboard sculpture that significantly transforms your body. Students were required to use only cardboard and fastening/adhesive materials (glue, string, tape, etc.) to create their artwork. They were not allowed to alter the cardboard through the addition of paint or other materials. Students were asked to consider how the sculpture would fit their bodies, how they would move, see and speak while wearing it, and how the scale of the project would impact viewer’s experiences and interpretations of the work. Students responded to this prompt through a variety of creative, surprising and captivating ways. The investment of time and consideration in the careful crafting of these artworks is evident. From segmented construction to paper-mâché approaches to using texture and positive and negative space, students pushed the boundaries of this everyday disposable material into impactful wearable sculptures.
TRU’s show will be exhibited in the main and hallway galleries from March 19 to 28, 2024
