Artist Statement:

Come see how we are Crossing Bridges at the Kamloops Arts Council. We are shining a spotlight on artists with learning and other disabilities. In our art circles held in these past months, we combined art practice with art history focused on modern and contemporary artists with disabilities (Frida Kahlo, Henry Matisse, Yayoi Kusama, Vincent Van Gogh, Keith Haring), learned the art movements they were best known for and our clients from the amazing communities we are in partnership with used these skills to create their own artworks. We want to create awareness as disability is a lived reality for many of the students we serve. Some are born with a disability and others acquire a disability later in life due to age, injury, or illness. The artwork inspired by these influential artists show the courage of our participants and the ability to put themselves out there through their work and really express who they are through their making. We are so honoured to showcase them and can’t wait for you to start Crossing Bridges with us and see their honest, stimulating artwork and galvanize your own creative thinking and senses. Come see us!

Their show will be exhibited in the Alcove and Vault Galleries from January 11th to February 15th, 2024.
