Each month the Kamloops Arts Council profiles a different member or donor, so that you can get to know the diverse and talented community that makes up the KAC. This month we feature Bert Braybrook, General Manager, of TELUS Communications Inc.
Tell us a bit about your business:
TELUS is an innovative communications company offering solutions in television, internet, cellular and home phone services as well as health solutions. We are tied closely to the communities we serve, and believe in giving back to these communities where we work and live. To do this, TELUS has created a number of community boards focused on donating funds to organizations that are making a difference in the community.
How did you get involved with the Kamloops Arts Council?
TELUS initially got involved a number of years ago when the Kamloops Arts Council applied for funding through one of the community boards for one of the programs they were starting [Crossing Bridges Arts Outreach – Youth Component] and through this partnership we have learned further of the contribution this KAC organization makes.
What’s one of your favourite artistic things to do? Paint? Write? Attend theatre?
Personally I enjoy live theatre. It always amazes me the talent demonstrated in the shows and the ability to captivate a large audience. I also appreciate there is so much more than just the acting to put on a show and marvel at the talents of the designers, set creators, costumes, everything involved.
Why is it important to support the arts?
I believe it’s important to support the arts to provide opportunities for those wanting and desiring the chance to try new things or build on skills they already have. Not everyone is an athlete, or scholar, yet you can be and still be involved in the arts. Unless the arts are supported through organizations and individuals, these doors quickly close.
