Art in Public Spaces

We at the KAC collaborate with several local organizations and venues to host gallery spaces which are open to the public eye; keeping our community colourful, and providing artists with audiences all over Kamloops!
Our Public Spaces Galleries are a continually rotating body of works which are hosted in places where TNRD locals and tourists alike congregate. Inspired by similar programs in Victoria and Kelowna, Art in Public Spaces keeps the Kamloops community vibrant, showcases our local talent, enhances cultural tourism, activates public spaces, creates economic development, and even promotes health and healing!
Current AIPS Locations Include:
- Kamloops YKA Airport Terminal
- Sagebrush Theatre Front of House
- TNRD Libraries (Downtown and Northshore Locations)
- Royal Inland Hospital
- North Shore Urgent & Primary Care Center (in collaboration with the Indigenous Resurrection Project)
AIPS Galleries exist on a rotating basis, generally year-round. Each location has a unique exhibition schedule, with short turnarounds between new show rotations to ensure our public galleries are bare for the most minimal amount of time.
Applications open two months before each rotation, so keep an eye out on our socials and monthly newsletter for new location openings and secure your spot in the limelight!

Frequently Asked Questions:
It’s great you’re submitting to two different venues! Yes, you can submit the same artwork to two different applications, but please only submit one work twice. This way, we have options for where your work can go. Sometimes, we may email you to ask if we can hang your work at a different venue or we suggest that you apply for another space because we think that it will work better in a different space.
Excellent question! We do not require the work submitted to never have been shown before, for Art in Public Spaces. If you have shown your work in other exhibitions such as Small//works, Art Exposed, or other exhibitions, it is fine to submit it to Art in Public Spaces. If we keep seeing the same work repeatedly shown, we might turn it down.
You join the ranks of ‘Paid Artist’! Seriously though, if your artwork sells, we arrange for one of the staff members to pick up the work, and we will inform you of the sale. When we call you, we may ask if you have another work ready to replace the sold one, and ask that you drop it off at the Old Courthouse. We will arrange the installation and process a cheque for you!
As soon as possible after the deadline closes. We try to arrange a selection date with the venue ahead of time, but sometimes circumstances change the date. Please know that we do everything possible to get it done quickly, and if you have concerns please shoot us an email and we will get back to you in a timely manner!
Sometimes it does. If the venue requests a theme, it will be made public in the announcement or in the application. While some venues do not request themes, please remember that the people who provide the spaces have a say in what gets accepted and they may decide that the work is not suitable for the space. An example of this is if you have themes of death in your artwork and you are submitting it to the hospital (while it may be an excellent work, the work may create anxiety in the people waiting for test results). So, consider the space when you are submitting works, and don’t take it personally!
Technically, no. We do accept work that is not for sale, if you just want the exposure and to add the exhibition to your CV, this is perfectly fine. However, it is good practice to have at least one submitted artwork be for sale because some of the venues ask us about sales (they do not get a commission, but it is something that proves positive results).
