For the member of the month – May 2026, we interviewed KAC member artist Lindsay Rempel. She is a featured artist for the 30th Anniversary of the Y-Dream Home lotto season and currently having a solo show called “Homecoming” at 2257 Coldwater Drive, Kamloops, BC.

Full Name: Lindsay Rempel

Medium: Oil painting, with a focus on landscape, florals and portraits— Expressive, gestural work inspired by place.

How long have you been practicing your art:
I’ve been practicing art for over 20 years, both formally through my fine arts degree and through a consistent personal practice.

What got you originally interested in the art you do:
I was always drawn to creating as a way of understanding what I was experiencing. Over time, that shifted into painting landscapes—especially places I’ve traveled to or lived in—as a way to capture not just what a place looks like, but how it feels to be there.

What is something you have learned about yourself through your art:
That I process the world visually and emotionally at the same time. Painting has shown me that I notice subtle shifts—light, color, atmosphere—and that those details hold meaning.

What is your favorite joke/quote:
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” – Thomas Merton and “I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.” – by Claude Monet

What is something most people don’t know about you:
A lot of my work starts from memory rather than direct reference. I often paint from the feeling of a place rather than trying to recreate it exactly.

If you could teach everyone one art medium or method, what would it be, why:
I would teach people how to work loosely and intuitively with paint. Letting go of perfection opens up a completely different experience of creating—it becomes more about connection than outcome.

What do you think makes art important:
Art shapes how people experience spaces, places, and even themselves. It creates connection—between people, and between people and the environments they move through.

Why are you a member of the Kamloops Arts Council:
To be part of a local creative community and to support the presence of art within Kamloops. It’s important to contribute to and stay connected with the place you’re creating from.

What are you looking forward to the most in this upcoming year:
Expanding my work into new environments—through travel, collaborations, and creating pieces that are tied to specific places and experiences. I’m especially interested in projects that connect art with how people experience a space.
