For the member of the month – September 2026, we interviewed Heather Piche, a watercolour artist and author of children’s books. Her books are currently available on KAC Literary artist bookshelf and online store.

How did you decide to write a book?
I wrote my first book after my 13 year old grandson died suddenly.  He was a well liked popular kid, and I was very impressed with his friends and what they did in the year after he died. It seemed to me such a healthy way to grieve and honour their friend.

Tell us about your first book
The first book is called “My Friend Died, and I Feel Sad.”  Everything in the book is something that at least a few of his friends did. The book itself was emotional for me to write, but also therapeutic.

Please tell us about your career as an author
I discovered that I really liked the whole process and have since written 3 other children’s books, several journals, some inspirational books and several adult colouring books. One of the most fun for me to write was a children’s book called “I Want To Get A Pumpkin.”  It was inspired by a trip I took from Logan Lake to Ashcroft, and other than the weather, everything I could encounter I did. I thought I would never get there.

Do you do any other artistic activity?  
 I also do watercolours and initially joined the Kamloops Art Council for that.  I appreciate the opportunities it offers to showcase and display my art in the community. In my retirement, I have really explored my creative side. I took up the flute again since high school and have joined the Merritt community band. I live in Logan Lake and am so inspired by the nature and beauty I see on my long, almost daily walks. Between the music, writing and painting, I am never bored.
