Daphne Jeyapal: Return

$114,000.00

The sockeye salmon embody an ancient form of knowing. They navigate unimaginable distances, surrendering neither to certainty nor control, but to an instinct that continually guides their return. This painting reflects that way of inhabiting the world, inviting viewers to slow down long enough for the current to reveal itself, and to trust the river wherever it leads. This series is inspired by the life and legacy of Two-Spirit artist, activist, and academic Jeffrey McNeil Seymour, whose sacrifices and ceremonies at the confluence of Simpcetkwe and Secwe̓pemcetkwe (North and South Thompson Rivers) continue to call the salmon home.

<About the artist>
Dr. Daphne Jeyapal is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and former social work professor whose practice explores migration, belonging, and the sacred relationship between humans and the natural world. After over a decade researching social policy and the resistance of Indigenous and racialized communities, Jeyapal left academia to pursue art as her primary vocation. Her work bridges scholarship and lived experience, approaching painting as a form of witnessing rather than representation. She is currently developing Dear Jeffrey: The Artist’s Way Home, an interdisciplinary project of art, writing, memorial design, and public storytelling, as a pathway to belonging and collective remembrance.
